With a rich academic history, she served as a professor of computer science at the University of Bath for over 17 years, from 2002 to 2019. Her academic journey has led her to affiliations with esteemed institutions such as the Princeton Center for Information Technology Policy, the University of Mannheim’s School of Social Sciences, the University of Oxford’s Department of Anthropology, and Harvard University’s Department of Psychology, among others.

Her insightful work began to gain attention early on when she recognized the challenges posed by anthropomorphized AI during her Dissertation research. This recognition prompted her to pen her first article on AI ethics titled “Just Another Artifact” back in 1998. A trailblazer in the realm of ethical AI, she co-authored the UK’s pioneering “Principles of Robotics” in 2010, which marked the first national AI ethics policy of its kind.

Educationally, she holds a BA in psychology from the University of Chicago and further honed her expertise with an MSc and MPhil in artificial intelligence from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, culminating in a Ph.D.

Her impact extends globally, as she was appointed as one of Germany’s chosen experts for the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence, highlighting her esteemed standing in the international AI community.
